Black Sea: up to 11 seafarers missing after drone strike sinks cargo ship off Bulgaria

5 min read

Update, 19 October 2026: Reports differ on how many crew are missing from HS Dignity. When the search ended on 14 October, Bulgaria's Ministry of Transport and Communications said six crew were rescued and ten were missing. Anadolu Agency, citing the Syrian Sailors Union, reported on 13 October that five of the 16 crew were rescued and 11 were missing. The Bulgarian newspaper 24 Chasa gave the same figures on 17 October and said the fifth survivor reached port later on another ship. On 18 October Syria's Foreign Ministry told the state news agency SANA that the ship carried 16 crew, 14 Syrians and two Egyptians. It said its head of mission in Sofia had visited the survivors and met Bulgarian border police in Varna.

The Guinea-Bissau-flagged cargo ship HS Dignity sank after a drone attack in the Black Sea off Bulgaria in the early hours of 13 October 2026. Bulgarian authorities ended the search for the missing crew on 14 October. According to Bulgaria's Ministry of Transport and Communications, as reported by the Bulgarian News Agency (BTA), six crew members were rescued and ten remain unaccounted for.

Early figures were different. On 13 October, CNN quoted Bulgaria's Interior Ministry as saying five of the 16 crew had been rescued by other merchant ships and 11 were missing. The crew were believed to be Syrian and Egyptian nationals, CNN reported. Bulgarian officials quoted by CNN said the ship sank 15 nautical miles east of the village of Krapets, while BTA gave the distance as 17 miles.

Search called off in bad weather

The ministry said the active search was suspended at 18:00 on 13 October, after 16 hours of continuous operations, because of darkness and difficult sea conditions. Nine vessels and two helicopters took part, along with ships passing nearby.

The search resumed at 10:30 on 14 October with a Bulgarian Navy vessel. It was halted at 14:30 when the weather turned, with north-northeasterly winds gusting up to 72 km/h, reduced visibility due to precipitation and sea state 5. The operation was officially declared over at 15:00.

Bulgaria's Ministry of Defence published video footage on its official Facebook page showing the Bulgarian Air Force taking part in the search and rescue operation in the area where HS Dignity sank. The video is shown below.

Second ship hit, all crew rescued

The same night, the Maltese-flagged, Ukrainian-owned cargo ship Chelsea 3 was struck by three drones off Byala, Bulgaria, CNN reported. Bulgarian border police rescued the whole crew of seven Ukrainian and eight Azerbaijani nationals. Some were injured and received medical help after being taken to the port of Varna.

The attacks came about a week after two other ships were hit by marine and aerial drones inside Bulgaria's exclusive economic zone. One was damaged and its crew rescued. The other sank, and the search for its 10 crew was later called off, according to CNN.

Official reactions

Bulgarian Prime Minister Rumen Radev said Bulgaria did not have "clear and conclusive evidence" to attribute responsibility, but that "the logic suggests that the outcome benefits the Russian Federation". He summoned the Russian ambassador and informed NATO and the EU. Russian authorities had not commented when CNN published its report.

Lloyd's List reported that the sinking follows a series of strikes on merchant ships in the western Black Sea, bringing the conflict closer to NATO waters and raising risks for shipowners, insurers and grain traders. The Syrian Seafarers' Union expressed "deep concern" over the fate of the missing crew, CNN reported.

What it means for crews

Bulgarian authorities are using navigational warnings to advise all vessels in the area to exercise increased caution and maintain heightened vigilance. Ukraine relies on shipping routes close to the coasts of Bulgaria and Romania, as well as Danube river ports, CNN noted, so many merchant ships pass through these waters.

  • Check the latest navigational warnings before and during any western Black Sea voyage.

  • Ask your company for the current security assessment and emergency procedures for the voyage, and make sure everyone on board knows their abandon-ship duties.

  • Crewing managers should keep crew lists and next-of-kin contacts up to date for every vessel trading in the region.
