Training and medical in United Kingdom
In the United Kingdom, the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) issues seafarer certificates of competency and approves the training providers, courses and doctors used for UK certification.
Seafarers working on UK ships need an ENG1 medical certificate. ENG1 examinations can only be carried out by doctors individually approved by the MCA. The MCA publishes lists of approved doctors for England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, and updates them monthly. Approval belongs to the named doctor, not to the clinic, so book with a doctor who appears on the current list.
You can check a UK certificate of competency, FSE or GMDSS endorsement with the MCA's online checker, using the certificate number and the holder's date of birth. If you have any doubt about a certificate or a medical, check it with the MCA directly.
