How it works

Fuel expands when heated, so the volume is corrected to 15 °C: standard volume = observed volume × VCF. Table 54B gives the VCF from the density at 15 °C and the temperature: α = K₀ / ρ² + K₁ / ρ, VCF = exp(−α · ΔT · (1 + 0.8 · α · ΔT)), with K₀ = 186.9696 and K₁ = 0.4862 for fuel oils.

Mass in vacuum = standard volume × density at 15 °C. Mass in air, used in trade, takes away the buoyancy of air: standard volume × (density − 1.1 kg/m³). Example: 1,000 m³ at 50 °C, density 991.0: VCF 0.9760, 966.1 t in air.

The official ASTM tables, with their rounding, the bunker delivery note and the surveyor's figures govern.
