Engine
Fuel consumption and endurance
Fuel per day from the engine load and its specific consumption, the fuel a passage needs with a reserve, and how long the fuel remaining on board lasts.
Generators, boiler
How it works
Fuel per day (t) = power (kW) × SFOC (g/kWh) × 24 / 1,000,000. 10,000 kW at 175 g/kWh burns 42 t a day. Turned round, SFOC = fuel (t) × 1,000,000 / (power × hours): compare it with the shop test to see how the engine is doing.
A passage takes distance / speed / 24 days; its fuel is that times the daily consumption, plus the reserve your company requires. Endurance = fuel remaining on board / fuel per day.
Boilers, generators and heating burn fuel too: add them to the daily figure.
